Irvine, CA – Pedestrian Killed in Accident on 405 FWY

Irvine, CA (January 4, 2022) – On Tuesday evening, January 3, an accident was reported in Irvine involving a vehicle and a pedestrian that tragically resulted in the pedestrian’s death.

According to reports from the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred a little after 7 p.m. when a male pedestrian attempted to cross the southbound lanes of the 405 freeway near MacArthur Boulevard in Irvine. A vehicle that was traveling south on the freeway failed to stop for the pedestrian and slammed into the person while he was in the middle of the roadway. The pedestrian sustained very serious injuries as a result of the collision.

Paramedics were immediately called and arrived on the scene within minutes where they found the pedestrian lying in the roadway. The paramedics assessed the pedestrian’s injuries and provided medical care. The pedestrian sustained very severe injuries and despite the life-saving attempts performed by the paramedics, the pedestrian passed away due to his injuries shortly after 7:30 p.m. The pedestrian’s name has not been released at this time, pending notification of his next of kin.

Police are still investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash. Officers shut down I-405 between MacArthur Boulevard and the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway to allow paramedics to care for the victim, police to conduct their investigation, and crews to clear the scene.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this tragedy.

Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in California

Being a pedestrian in the state of California is a very dangerous situation. California has a serious problem with pedestrians being seriously injured or killed on California’s roadways, which is growing worse by the day. In 2018, California reported almost 900 deaths from pedestrians being hit by vehicles, which increased by 25 percent since 2014.

California is a beautiful state with very pleasant weather, leading to more people being outside year-round. Walking and being outdoors is encouraged in the state, especially as an alternative to driving when possible. However, pedestrians need to be on guard and aware of the dangers of being a pedestrian. There is nothing a pedestrian can do to protect themselves from a sudden hit by a car, which makes them especially vulnerable to suffering very serious injuries or fatalities. However, there are a few safety tips pedestrians can follow to try to keep themselves safe:

  • Wear brightly colored clothes with reflectors and a flashlight if walking at night
  • Always walk on the sidewalk
  • Make eye contact with drivers and don’t assume they see you or will stop for you
  • Pay attention to your surroundings
  • Stay off your phone, especially texting, as this can distract you
  • Obey traffic signals
  • Look both ways before you cross a street and always watch for turning vehicles

If someone you love was killed in a pedestrian accident, a wrongful death suit may be filed seeking compensation for damages, which may include medical expenses, funeral expenses, lost future income and benefits, pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of companionship. A wrongful death suit can bring closure and ease the stress of financial burdens caused by your loved one’s death. Insurance companies have strict filing deadlines, so you will want to speak to an attorney soon.
