Laguna Niguel, CA – Fatal Pedestrian Accident Involving DUI Driver on I-5
Laguna Niguel, CA (May 21, 2022) – Around 10:51 p.m. on the night of Wednesday, May 18, a pedestrian was killed in an accident in Laguna Niguel.
According to Orange County officials, the accident happened before midnight in the southbound lanes of I-5 around the area of the Crown Valley Parkway. The driver of a gray Tesla Model 3 was traveling in the area when they suddenly struck a male pedestrian. The driver, who has since been identified as a 44-year-old man, got out of his vehicle and fled the scene on foot. The Tesla, in the meantime, was struck by a BMW driven by a 29-year-old woman. The BMW was then hit by a red Porsche driven by a 57-year-old man.
Paramedics, fire crews, and several other responders were called to the scene to help those in need. The pedestrian, identified as a 20-year-old local male, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene due to his injuries. It is not believed that anyone else was hurt in the accident.
Police later determined that the driver of the BMW was driving intoxicated and she was placed under arrest.
The roadway was blocked in several lanes for an extended period of time. Police quickly worked to clear the scene.
No further details have been released but the investigation into the accident continues.
