Lompoc, CA – Multiple Children Injured in Accident at HWY 1 & Santa Lucia Rd
Lompoc, CA (September 18, 2022) – On Friday morning, September 16, an accident resulting in many injuries was reported in Lompoc.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident occurred in the morning, shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Highway 1 between Vandenberg Space Force Base and Lompoc, a couple of miles south of Santa Lucia Road. A van was traveling eastbound on Santa Lucia Road. The van attempted to make a turn onto Highway 1 when it was broadsided by another vehicle that was traveling southbound on Highway 1.
Emergency personnel was called to the scene. There were many children in the van that was broadsided. Due to the many injuries caused by the crash, multiple emergency agencies were called upon to render care to the victims. One of the children was ejected from the vehicle and sustained very serious injuries. This child was transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital for emergency care. There has been no update at this time as to their condition. Many other people, including more children, were transported to the hospital by ambulance. The driver of the other vehicle was also injured and taken to the hospital for further care.
The force of the impact caused major damage to the vehicles, blocked the roadway, and caused traffic to be significantly backed up. The vehicles had to be towed from the scene. Traffic was diverted while crews helped people from their cars, tended to injuries, and cleaned up the wreckage. The road reopened approximately two hours after the collision.
The authorities are still investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the crash and the events leading up to the collision.
