Fatal Rollover Accidents in California

Rollover crashes are some of the most dangerous types of accidents that can occur. They are the leading cause of death in SUV collisions and the second leading cause of death in collisions with sedans. Especially when a rollover accident occurs on a freeway at high speeds, the overturning of the vehicle and the way that the frame of the vehicle can become smashed and mangled, creates a serious accident that wreaks havoc on the occupants of the vehicles involved. If a vehicle is in a rollover accident, its passengers often suffer severe head trauma, concussions, broken bones, back and neck injuries, organ damage, severe cuts, lost limbs, paralysis, or death.

Accidents happen every day in California. There are many reasons why they happen, but the overwhelming majority occur due to reckless or negligent driving. This includes distracted driving, texting while driving, speeding, impaired driving, or failing to yield or stop at traffic lights and stop signs. Research indicates that more than one-third of all road fatalities in the US are caused by reckless driving. Rollover crashes in particular can also be caused by:

  • Turning a corner too sharply
  • Cutting wheels too sharply to avoid a hazard on the road
  • Turning at high speeds
  • Top-heavy vehicles
  • Loss of control of the vehicle
  • Inclement weather conditions
  • Wet roads cause skidding, hydroplaning, or fishtailing
