Fatal Car Accidents in California

In 2018, more than 3,500 people were killed in fatal car accidents in California, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Each year since then, the number of serious and fatal traffic accidents has unfortunately increased, even during the pandemic. In 2022, there were already over 1,000 deaths related to car accidents in just the first three months.

Accidents happen for many reasons, but most often due to some form of reckless or negligent driving, such as texting while driving, speeding, impaired driving, or simply failing to yield or stop at traffic lights and stop signs. More than one-third of all road fatalities in the US are caused by reckless driving. On congested Californian roadways, it is especially important for drivers to exercise caution when commuting, however, that is often the opposite of what happens in reality. When roads are backed up drivers get impatient and speed or cut corners to get out of traffic and reach their destinations. Those decisions to engage in risky behavior have consequences though and people’s lives can be permanently impacted. When a reckless driver causes an accident, they are liable for the damage that they have caused by their actions.
