Nipomo, CA – Caltrans Worker Injured in Construction-Zone-Accident on HWY 101

Nipomo, CA (September 13, 2022)  On Friday afternoon, September 9, a construction-zone-accident was reported in Nipomo that left one person seriously injured.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on southbound Highway 101 near Tefft Street, when dispatch received a call requesting help relating to a work-zone accident. The accident happened when a pickup truck traveling through a work zone drifted right onto the shoulder and sideswiped a Caltrans truck and then collided with a Caltrans worker who was working on the shoulder of the roadway. The worker, 42-year-old Jose Perez Hernandez, was part of a work crew completing road repairs. The pickup truck eventually came to rest south of the crash scene on the southbound shoulder.

The accident caused disruptions in the area. The force of the impact was so great that it caused Hernandez to sustain very severe injuries. Officials report that he was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center for further medical treatment. No one else was reported as injured as a result of this accident.

The authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and the events leading up to the collision.

Our thoughts are with the victim injured in this accident. We hope for his full recovery.

Construction Accidents in California

Many of California’s are in a state of disrepair. Constructions zones maintain a constant presence on the roadways. Construction zones add extra dangers to Californian’s daily commutes. They can be extremely dangerous areas to traverse due to merging traffic, reduced lanes, narrower lanes, inadequate warnings, sudden stopping, debris on the roads, and uneven terrain. Furthermore, the large equipment, trucks, and additional construction workers further increase the congestion on California’s roadways and create extra hazards that drivers have to avoid.

The workers in a construction zone are also at risk of being injured. They are working in a small space and have thousands of cars and trucks traveling through as they’re working. Pedestrians are especially vulnerable to sustaining a severe injury when hit by a car or truck since they have nothing to protect themselves from a sudden collision. Oftentimes, drivers are also not observing the reduced speed limits that are posted in work zones, which increases the risk of accidents occurring.

A construction accident can cause significant interruptions to your normal life, including new financial worries resulting from medical expenses for treatments to lost income from not being able to work during your recovery. Depending on the circumstances of your accident, you may be entitled to compensation from those who caused the accident.
