Phelan, CA – Three Killed, Others Critically Injured in Crash on SR-138
Phelan, CA (October 5, 2022) – On Monday afternoon, October 2, a serious accident was reported in Phelan that tragically killed three people and injured two others.
According to officials, the accident occurred around 5:45 p.m. on State Route 138 near Sheep Creek Road in Phelan. According to police, the accident involved a Chevy pickup and a Mitsubishi sedan. The Mitsubishi was traveling westbound on State Route 138 when it traveled around a bend in the road and collided with a Chevy pickup truck that was heading eastbound on State Route 138. The pickup truck smashed into the passenger side of the sedan. The impact of the crash was so forceful that the sedan was severely mangled and split into two parts. There was significant front-end damage to the pickup truck.
Emergency personnel was called to the scene. Firefighters and paramedics quickly responded to the accident and worked to help the victims from the vehicles and tended to injuries. Due to the severity of the injuries, a medical helicopter was also requested to respond. Unfortunately, three people involved in the accident suffered very severe injuries and died as a result of their injuries. They are described as a 49-year-old, a 69-year-old, and a 63-year-old. Police have not released their identities at this time pending notification of their next of kin.
Two other people were severely injured in this accident. A child was among those injured and was rushed by ambulance to a local hospital, where they are listed in critical condition. Another person was transported by ambulance and then subsequently airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.
The accident delayed local traffic as crews tended to the victims, conducted their investigation, and cleared the accident. Both directions of State Route 138 were closed for some time as the investigation was underway and as the police waited for the coroner to arrive.
