Fatal Car Accidents in California

California is the most populated state in the nation. It is common in California for people to own cars. There are over 27 million registered vehicles in the state and it is one of the most congested and dangerous places to drive. Every day the state’s main metropolitan areas, such as the Los Angeles region are flooded with traffic, causing long commutes, traffic jams, and accidents to be a daily occurrence. Many of these accidents result in serious injury or death. More than 3,500 people die in traffic accidents each year in California and this number has increased steadily over the years.

Head-on collisions often happen when a driver crosses over the centerline or when driving in the wrong direction. Head-on collisions are often the most dangerous kind of crash. When they occur on highways due to the high rate of speed that the vehicles are traveling, the results are often catastrophic injuries or fatalities. As with other kinds of accidents, head-on collisions are most often caused by reckless driving. Reckless driving is the number one cause of accidents in California. Some examples of common feckless driving behaviors include texting while driving, speeding, impaired driving, or failing to yield or stop at traffic lights and stop signs.

Under the law, each driver on the road is deemed to owe a duty of care to the other drivers that they will operate their vehicle safely and responsibly so as to minimize the chances of causing harm to another. When an accident happens, this legal duty of care has likely been breached and the offending party can be held liable for damages they’ve caused by their actions. When someone you love is killed by someone else’s action, the surviving family members can file a wrongful death claim against the negligent party. An experienced wrongful death attorney can walk you through this process and help you handle these important matters.
