Young Child Dies After a Dog in California Bites Him

A tragic story from the San Francisco Chronicle reports on the death of a six-year-old Union City boy after he was bitten by a family dog. According to reports from family and neighbors, Kava, the 2-year-old pit bull involved in the attack, was generally known to be friendly and obedient, and the dog had not bitten anyone prior to this fatal incident.

According to Commander Ben Horner, six-year-old Nephi Selu was at his home on Elizabeth Way, where he resided with his extended family, when the incident occurred. Horner said, “We think he may have been trying to ride [the dog], like a little horse. The dog attacked the boy and bit him on top of his head.”

The dog bit the child only once, but the injuries resulting from the bite wound were very serious. Although reports are that Nephi was conscious and communicative for several hours after he was bitten, the child later succumbed to his injuries. It is reported that young Nephi Selu died in the hospital less than five hours after he sustained the dog bite injury.

The article goes on to talk about other recent dog bites in California, and it’s especially important for parents to take note because this sad story is another example of how serious dog attacks can be unpredictable and sometimes tragic. Even dogs without a history of aggressive behavior can sometimes bite, and many children are bitten by the historically well-behaved dogs of family and friends each year in Orange County and throughout California.
