Newport Beach Hit-and-Run Driver Returns after Hitting Bicyclist

On Friday, April 19^th, 2013, a group of four bicyclists visiting from Las Vegas received a nasty surprise when one was struck and injured by a hit-and-run driver on a Newport Beach roadway. The accident occurred around 5:00 p.m. on eastbound Pacific Coast Highway near the Bayshore Drive intersection.  Police have not yet released any information about citations related to the accident. The bicyclists were on a casual ride during a weekend vacation to Newport Beach when the accident occurred.

According to Leslie Nichols, one of the bicyclists and a friend of the injured woman, the driver of a Cadillac approached the single-file group of cyclists from behind and apparently began honking. Nichols stated that, “He was so impatient, he couldn’t wait two seconds until the road curved into the cutaway.” The driver collided with bicyclist Amy Yancy, who had to be transported to a local hospital for treatment of a head injury. According to a witness, Yancy was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. No further information about Yancy’s condition had been released at the time of this report.

The driver of the Cadillac initially left the scene, but Nichols says that he later returned to the scene and blamed Yancy for causing the accident. His name has not been released.
