Teen Leads Police on Wild OC Chase

On July 30, 2012, police filed charges against a teenage boy who led them on a wild chase through three Orange County cities: Buena Park, La Palma, and Cypress. The teen was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, stealing and operating a stolen vehicle, and leading police in a vehicle pursuit.

According to Cypress police spokesperson Paulo Morales, the pursuit began at 4:12PM on Sunday, July 29, 2012. The teen, driving a silver Dodge pickup, attempted to leave the scene of a two-car accident police believe he caused on the westbound 91 freeway at Knott Avenue in Buena Park.

A California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer saw the teenager leaving and began pursuit. The boy exited highway 91 at Valley View Street and headed south. He traveled through La Palma and entered Cypress. At one point, he threw his truck into reverse and smashed into the CHP patrol car—the officer was not injured—and then continued forward.

Finally, at 4:36PM, a CHP officer performed a maneuver called a pursuit intervention technique, or PIT, and stopped the truck near Walker Street and Marion Avenue in Cypress.

The teen, whose identity was not released because he is a minor, was taken to a hospital to treat injuries apparently sustained in the initial crash. He was then taken into custody at Juvenile Hall.
