Why Hit-and-Run Accidents Are More Common in Southern California

This week, we have been discussing hit-and-run accidents: why they occur, what you should do after one, and what your legal rights are as a victim in the wake of a crash. In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at hit-and-run accidents in Southern California and why they take place there at a higher rate than in other places across the country. Study: Unlicensed Drivers Are Behind Many Los Angeles Hit-and-Run Accidents Drivers flee the scene of an accident for many reasons, but in the Los Angeles area, illegal drivers make up a larger percentage of violators than other types of drivers. In a new paper published by Don Rosenberg, statistics show that the number of hit-and-run accidents in the L.A. area is four time the national average, and that 20 percent of all fatal crashes involve someone who is not legally allowed to be behind the wheel. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, those who are unlicensed drivers (illegal immigrants, those who have never had a valid license, and those with suspended or revoked licenses) flee the scene of the accident 50 percent of the time. In 2010, 21,000 hit-and-run accidents occurred in Los Angeles. Some have connected the high rate of hit-and-run accidents in Los Angeles with the high number of illegal immigrants and unlicensed drivers in the area. However, it is difficult to know the true reasons because many hit-and-run drivers are never found. Orange County Personal Injury Attorney
