A 53-year-old female bus driver sustained injuries when the driver of another vehicle who ran a red light broadsided the empty school bus she was driving. The other driver died at the scene. Despite the serious nature of the impact and the injuries to the hip area of the client that her medical providers were having difficulty diagnosing and correcting, the insurance company for the other party, Mercury Insurance Company, was only offering $60,000 against a policy limits demand of $100,000. The case was tried with Mercury decreasing the offer to $20,000 in the middle of the trial. The jury came back with an award for $186,000. Along with court costs Mercury ended up paying a total of $232,000 to resolve the claim six months after the verdict was returned, after it realized it had no legitimate grounds to appeal the verdict.
