Irvine, CA (July 24, 2023) – The Irvine Police Department (IPD) responded to reports of a deadly pedestrian accident near the junction of Irvine Boulevard and Marketplace on Friday evening, July 21.
At around 7:45 p.m., IPD officers and Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) rescue teams responded. According to the preliminary inquiry, a black Jeep Wrangler was traveling toward Marketplace on Irvine Boulevard westbound before hitting a female pedestrian crossing the crosswalk on Marketplace.
The woman, an 87-year-old from Irvine, died at the scene after suffering severe injuries in the incident.
Officers made contact with the vehicle’s driver, who stayed at the scene and assisted with the inquiry. The motorist was not found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, though the accident is still under active review by the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) of IPD. Detective Christopher Ostrowski is asking anyone with knowledge about the crash to get in touch with him.
Our deepest condolences go out to the deceased woman’s family.
Residents in Orange County are ditching their cars in favor of foot travel to take in the region’s stunning natural beauty. Unfortunately, more people die as pedestrians in vehicle accidents than as motorists or passengers. California has one of the highest rates of pedestrian injuries due to motor vehicle collisions. In the years spanning 2008 and 2019, 7127 pedestrians lost their lives in California. There was a 34.4 percent increase in overall fatalities and a 34.5 percent increase in pedestrian fatalities in California during this time period.
In addition, 375 pedestrians were killed by cars in Orange County throughout the course of the five years ending on the last day of 2021, as reported by the Orange County coroner’s office. Those who are out and about along major thoroughfares are greatly at risk for severe injury or death, as shown by statistics on pedestrian accidents in Orange County.
Pedestrians must always be on the lookout for and avoid cars since they are at a significantly higher risk of serious harm or death while in their path. A pedestrian’s chance of getting in an accident may be greatly reduced by following certain simple precautions and rules of the road.
The family of a pedestrian accident victim, however, may have legal recourse for monetary damages. If you want answers concerning your loved one’s death and financial compensation, filing a lawsuit against the responsible party may assist. Due to the strict filing requirements imposed by insurance companies and state law, you should speak with an attorney as soon as possible.
