Motorcycle Accidents in California

Motorcycles are a favorite mode of transportation for Californians. However, it is also a very dangerous option. Motorcycle accidents very frequently happen in the state. When motorcycles are hit by a vehicle, they have no way of protecting themselves and serious injury or death is very likely to occur. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a motorcyclist is 26 times more likely to die in a collision than occupants of passenger vehicles, and 5 times more likely to be injured. Motorcycle accident injuries can be catastrophic and life-altering. Some of the most common injuries incurred by motorcyclists include traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, lower-extremity injuries, bone fractures, internal injuries, and road rash. These injuries can result in a long recovery and negatively impact a person’s life.

All drivers must watch out for motorcycles and give them space, as motorcyclists are just as entitled to share the roadways as other vehicles. Many times, motorcyclists are in accidents because of the negligent actions of the other drivers on the road. Some factors that contribute to motorcycle accidents include lane splitting (California is the only state in which this is a legal practice), left-hand turns, cars not seeing a motorcyclist, tailgating, speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, and road hazards.
