Palmdale, CA (October 21, 2022) – On Wednesday night, October 19, an accident was reported in Palmdale involving two vehicles and a pedestrian that tragically resulted in the pedestrian’s death.
According to reports from the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred when a vehicle was traveling east on Avenue S at high speeds heading towards 25th Street East in Los Angeles. Another car was stopped at a traffic light at this intersection. The speeding car slammed into the stopped vehicle at Avenue S and 25th Street East. The force of the impact caused both cars to continue traveling onto the Palmdale sidewalk where a male pedestrian was selling balloons. The cars hit the male pedestrian and one car continued and crashed into a utility pole also, before coming to a stop. The pedestrian sustained very serious injuries as a result of the collision.
Paramedics were immediately called and arrived on the scene within minutes and assessed the pedestrian’s injuries and provided medical care. The pedestrian sustained very severe injuries and was rushed by ambulance to Antelope Valley Hospital. Sadly, the pedestrian’s injuries were too severe, and he passed away at the hospital. The pedestrian’s name has not been released at this time, pending notification of his next of kin. He is described as a man in his 20’s or 30’s.
The paramedics treated the occupants of the vehicles at the scene. The driver of the vehicle that caused the crash was transported by ambulance for treatment of undisclosed injuries. There is no information at this time as to the driver of the other vehicle and if they sustained injuries in the accident.
Police are still investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash. Officers closed the intersection of 25th Street and Avenue S for several hours as the victims were treated, police conducted their investigation, and crews cleared the wreckage.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this tragedy.
Our thoughts are also with those that were injured in this accident. We hope for their full recovery.
In 2018, California reported almost 900 deaths from pedestrian accidents with vehicles, which has increased by 25 percent since 2014. There is nothing a pedestrian can do to protect themselves from suddenly being hit by a car and are especially vulnerable to suffering very serious injuries or fatalities.
Under the law, drivers are held to a high standard of care for operating their vehicles, which is called a duty of care. This standard is in place because of the realization that vehicles can inflict great bodily harm on others if not careful. The driver’s duty of care extends to pedestrians also. Drivers must maintain a proper lookout for pedestrians and operate their vehicles in such a manner to maintain control and avoid hitting or causing harm to a pedestrian on the sidewalk, crosswalk, road, or wherever else they come in contact with the pedestrian. This duty of care is breached when a pedestrian is hit by a car.
If someone you love was killed in a pedestrian accident, a wrongful death suit may be filed seeking compensation for damages that have been incurred, which may include medical expenses, funeral expenses, lost future income and benefits, pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of companionship. While no monetary value can replace your loved one’s life, a wrongful death suit can bring closure and ease the stress of financial burdens caused by your loved one’s death. Insurance companies have strict filing deadlines, so you will want to speak to an attorney soon.
