USPS Warns about Dog Bites during National Prevention Week

Although it may sound like a gag from a comic strip to some, postal carriers across the US are bitten by dogs every year and sustain sometimes serious or life-threatening injuries. Because of this real association between dog bites and postal carriers, the United States Postal Service (USPS) recently honored National Dog Bite Prevention Week from May 19 to May 25 by raising awareness and offering educational resources to the public.

The safety campaign is based on the idea, “Any dog can bite. Don’t be fooled.” The focus is on responsible pet ownership to prevent bites, and the USPS offers resources on its website that address public awareness and bite prevention. According to reports referenced in the USPS news release, the most frequent victims of dog bites are:

  • Children
  • The elderly
  • Postal carriers

Additionally, dog bites are one of the most-frequently reported public health issues and are responsible for as much as five percent of all emergency room visits.

The USPS was only one of several organizations across the nation that marked National Dog Bite Prevention Week with efforts toward public awareness and safety.

Dog bites are no laughing matter, and victims should understand their rights regarding compensation for medical bills, plastic surgery, pain and suffering, and more.
