Preventing Motorcycle Accidents Caused by Intoxication

This week, we wrote about the tragic death of Suicide Silence frontman, Mitch Lucker. The lead singer of a Riverside heavy metal band was allegedly riding his motorcycle under the influence of alcohol on Halloween night in Huntington Beach when he lost control of his bike and slammed into a light pole on Main Street. His wife told those gathered at his candlelight vigil that Lucker had struggle with alcohol addiction.

Sadly, hundreds of motorcycle riders are injured or killed in traffic accidents each year in California because of drinking and riding. How can we help prevent these DUI motorcycle accidents?

  • Realize your balance and coordination are affected early. You are more likely to be involved in a motorcycle accident than a car accident after drinking. Why? Because even one or two beers can affect your balance and coordination—two skills vital to riding a motorcycle.
  • Have a plan when attending biker rallies and motorcycle events. Many DUI motorcycle accidents take place at biker events, where drinking and bar hopping is still part of the culture. Have fun at these events, but plan a way to get home safely that doesn’t involve riding your bike.
  • Understand that drinking affects your judgment. Everyone knows drinking affects your motor skills. Fewer people remember that alcohol also affects your judgment—which can put you in serious danger on your bike. Drunk riders may be more likely to speed, make poor decisions, or drive recklessly.
