Florence, CA (August 22, 2022) – On Friday morning, August 19, two people died and others were injured in a multi-vehicle crash that occurred following a police attempt at executing a traffic stop.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the accident occurred at the intersection of Manchester Ave and South Broadway in Florence, right off the 110 Freeway. The incident began as the police were attempting to pull over a vehicle, but instead, the vehicle did not stop and sped down the street, westward on Manchester Ave. The car fleeing from the police struck another car traveling southbound on Broadway and subsequently caused another two vehicles to get hit.
Emergency personnel was immediately called to the scene. Paramedics and firefighters responded quickly and worked to help the people from their vehicles and tend to their injuries. Two people, from the first car that was struck, sadly sustained such severe injuries that they died and were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
The other vehicles involved in the accident sustained substantial damage. There is no information about the extent of the injuries of the other people involved in the crash at this time.
LAPD officers have detained two men in custody who are awaiting charges. The circumstances surrounding the accident are under further investigation by local authorities.

Most motorists in the state of California either have been or will be pulled over by a police officer at some point in their driving career. California law clearly states that if a police officer tries to pull you over, you must always pull over to the side of the road, away from traffic, as soon as safely possible. According to California traffic law, not pulling over for the police, is a criminal offense, punishable at least as a misdemeanor or greater depending on the severity of the circumstances.
While most traffic stops are for minor traffic infractions, some traffic stops are for more serious violations of criminal investigations. Traffic stops are an important investigative and crime-stopping tool used by police officers who may suspect criminal activity. When criminal activity is afoot, what may seem like a simple traffic stop can quickly escalate into a more serious situation, as the criminal tries to flee and evade the police.
Reckless driving is a very serious problem on the country’s roadways. When reckless driving is coupled with criminal behaviors and fleeing law enforcement the chances of accidents occurring with a very serious injury or fatal outcome increases exponentially.
