Mission Viejo Woman Dies in Tragic Irvine Freeway Accident

In sad news, a recent article out of Mission Viejo reports that one woman has died following a tragic Irvine car accident on the south 405 Freeway. The accident took place around 2:40 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, and officials believe that distracted driving may have been the cause of the fatal accident.

According to preliminary details from California Highway Patrol Officer S. Dagenais, 65-year-old Marilyn Russell was driving a 1966 Ford at the time of the accident and was traveling on the south 405 Freeway, just north of Laguna Canyon Road. A southbound driver in a 2001 Mercedes-Benz reportedly rear-ended Russell, sending the Ford across lanes of traffic to collide with the center divider. Marilyn Russell, of Mission Viejo, was fatally injured in the accident, and she was pronounced dead by the Orange County coroner’s office on Sunday following the accident. At the time of the report, no details were available about the condition of the other driver.

According to early reports from the investigation, the 54-year-old driver of the Mercedes-Benz had been distracted just before the accident and took her eyes away from the road to look at a nearby field. When she became aware of Russell’s vehicle traveling more slowly in front of her, she hit the brakes, but it was too late to avoid the accident. The driver was traveling at about 60 m.p.h. at the time of the accident, and Dagenais says that Russell was traveling “significantly slower.”

The Mission Viejo car accident attorneys with Russell & Lazarus are saddened to hear about this tragic accident, and we offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Marilyn Russell in this difficult time.
